What is the SMT production line?

SMT production line refers to a production line that uses surface mount technology (SMT) to assemble electronic products. SMT is a technology that compresses traditional electronic components into smaller surface mount components (SMC) and then directly mounts and solders them on the surface of printed circuit boards (PCBs). Also call SMT PCB assembly line.

    The standardization, serialization and consistency of welding conditions of chip components make SMT highly automatic. The component failure caused by welding process will be greatly reduced and the reliability will be improved.

    Due to the improvement of production equipment efficiency and the reduction of packaging material consumption, the packaging cost of most SMT components has been lower than that of THT components with the same type and function. Consequently, the sales price of SMT components is lower than that of THT components.

  • Simplify the Production Process & Reduce the Production Cost

    When mounting on the PCBs, the leads of components need not be bent, shaped or cut short, so that the whole process is shortened and the production efficiency is improved. The processing cost of the same functional circuit is lower than that of through-hole interpolation, which can generally reduce the total production cost by 30%~50%.

  • Realize Miniaturization

    The geometric size and volume occupied by SMT electronic components are much smaller than that of through-hole interpolation components, which can be generally reduced by 60%~70%, and some components can even be reduced by 90% in size and volume. At the same time, the weight of components can be reduced by 60%~90%.

  • High Signal Transmission Speed

    SMT assembled components are not only compact in structure, but also high in safety density. The assembly density can reach 5.5~20 solder joints per square centimeter when the PCB is pasted on both sides. SMT assembled PCBs can realize high speed signal transmission due to short circuit and small delay. At the same time, SMT assembled PCBs are more resistant to vibration and impact. This is of great significance to realize ultra-high speed operation of electronic equipment.

  • Good High Frequency Effects

    Because the components have no lead or short lead, the distributed parameters of the circuit are naturally reduced and the RF interference is reduced.

How do SMT production lines work？

One fully automatic SMT line machine includes PCB loader, SMT Stencil Printer, Conveyor, Pick and Place Machine, Reflow Oven, AOI, NG/OK Unloader.

Take our Russian security camera manufacturer as an example:

They put the PCB board in the Loader, and then the PCB will be transferred to the stencil printing machine for solder paste printing, and then enter the pick and place machine to place components of different sizes on the PCB, and then enter the reflow oven for high-temperature soldering. Finally The produced PCBA enters the unloader.

How should I choose SMT production lines correctly？

The main components of the SMT Assembly line include:
 
  •  Printing machine: used to print solder paste or adhesive to the specified position of the PCB.
  • Mounting machine: accurately mounts surface mount components on the PCB.
  • Reflow oven: melts the solder paste by heating to achieve welding of components and PCB.
  • Inspection equipment: used to detect the quality of the assembled PCB, such as automatic optical inspection (AOI) and X-ray inspection.
  • Rework equipment: used to repair defects that occur during the production process.

The types of SMT assembly lines are mainly divided into fully automatic production lines and semi-automatic production lines.  Fully automatic production lines refer to the entire production line equipment is fully automatic equipment, while semi-automatic production lines refer to the main production equipment is not fully connected, and some operations need to be completed manually.
